Photodynamic Therapy

Skin conditions such as acne and sun damage are often difficult to treat with conventional methods, but at Lougheed Laser Centre we offer non-invasive, painless photodynamic therapy to target skin concerns without causing further damage or irritation.

Located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Lougheed Laser Centre is led by Dr. Marcia Fleming and registered nurse Jennifer Sutherland. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and find out how photodynamic therapy can improve the look and feel of your skin using nonablative light therapy.

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

At Lougheed Laser Centre, we understand that not every type of skin responds to the same treatments. We offer a wide range of skin rejuvenation solutions for all of your cosmetic needs, including light-based photodynamic therapy to help treat dark spots and damaged skin at the source.

Photodynamic therapy can help treat a wide range of skin conditions, including:

How Does Photodynamic Therapy Work?

At Lougheed Laser Centre, photodynamic therapy is a four-step process:

  • Treated areas are gently exfoliated with microdermabrasion
  • Levulan, a photosensitive medication is applied to the skin
  • The medication is absorbed by the freshly-exfoliated skin, allowing maximum penetration underneath the surface and improving results.
  • Using either IPL or Blu-U light therapies, the light source is focused on the prepped skin, activating the medication and addressing skin concerns at a cellular level.

In addition to targeting dark spots in the skin, photodynamic therapy also shrinks the skin’s oil glands, reducing acne breakouts and minimizing the potential for acne scars.

Why Choose Photodynamic Therapy at Lougheed Laser Centre?

Over-the-counter acne products often contain small amounts of medicinal properties as well as inactive ingredients that can often make acne breakouts worse. For men and women who are having trouble controlling their acne and prefer a non-abrasive, gentle treatment, photodynamic therapy at Lougheed Laser Centre may be a possible solution.

Our medical team of skincare professionals have extensive experience with a wide range of skin conditions, and during your consultation we will listen to your cosmetic concerns and evaluate your individual condition to help you determine if photodynamic therapy is right for you.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As photodynamic therapy penetrates below the surface while leaving healthy skin and tissues intact, most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Slight flushing or redness of the skin akin to a sunburn may be present on treated areas afterward, which is common and should subside in a week.

Contact Lougheed Laser Centre today to schedule a consultation with our medical team and find out how photodynamic therapy can improve the appearance and health of your skin without harsh treatments or downtime.
