Spider Veins

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are those tiny purple or red blood vessels seen on the surface of the skin. Resembling spider webs, they either appear in small masses or as short jagged lines on the face around the nose and cheeks, or on the legs. Spider veins can cause your skin to look flushed or older beyond its years. While not a medically serious condition, they can look unattractive, causing some people to be more self-conscious about their appearance.

Spider Vein Causes

The main causes of spider veins are prolonged exposure to the sun, genetics, aging, trauma, certain medical conditions, and lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking. Spider veins may also form on the legs as a result of gravity interfering with the veins’ ability to efficiently pump blood back to the heart.

Spider Vein Treatment

Lougheed Laser in Burnaby offers two types of spider vein treatments. The first is spider vein removal utilizing a laser. This method provides safe and effective treatment for the removal of spider veins on the face and legs by delivering a precise dosage of energy to each vein, without affecting the surrounding skin. The light energy is absorbed by the damaged blood vessels, causing coagulation and elimination. The blood vessels are then naturally absorbed by your body.

Sclerotherapy is more often used on the legs as the spider vein treatment of choice. This medical procedure involves an injection of a solution directly into the spider vein causing it to swell, stick together and the blood to clot. Over time the vessel turns to scar tissue and fades from view.
