If life is about change, skin is proof. Our skin is at the mercy of many forces as we age: sun, harsh weather, our own bad habits. Your skin reflects your health. It’s your body’s canvas and your most valuable asset. For good skin care, start developing healthy habits that guard your valued possession from outer (and inner) forces. It’s the only skin you’ll ever get, so your daily habits mean everything.

Skin is the largest organ of the body, vital to protecting the inner workings of the complex human machine. It functions as

  • a barrier that prevents toxic substances from damaging the body's vulnerable interior
  • a first line of defense that prevents bacterial, viral, and fungal organisms from causing disease
  • a thermostat that regulates body temperature, allowing us to live in various environments
  • an organ that senses stimuli through touch and temperature The skin also contains sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. Its extreme versatility enables tremendous growth from childhood to adulthood and efficient repair following injury.

The normal changes associated with facial aging are the result of both: age related (fat and bone loss known as atrophy, and skin laxity for example) and external factors (like ultraviolet light / sunlight, chemicals, and smoking). These factors contribute to biological changes associated with age and create predictable patterns of facial change. An over-simplistic analogy is mimicked by the changes in the helium balloon your child wouldn't let you throw away. With time there is loss of internal volume (gas in this example) and as a result the covering looses its taught shape, luster, and becomes wrinkled.

By far, the most important thing you can do for your skin is to be diligent about sun protection -- it's your best defense against skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but it's also the most preventable.

While it's impossible to completely escape the effects of aging on your skin -- fine lines around the eyes start to crop up when women are in their 20s -- some TLC can help minimize the damage. It’s never too late to integrate a proper skin care routine. If you’re a teenager or you have a teenager at home, start now to develop healthy habits. If you’re an older adult, lead by example! You can’t replace the skin you’re in, but you can still nourish and pamper it to protect it for the future. With the proper care, your skin can stay fresh as you age.
