What is Botox® Cosmetic and how does it work?

Botox® is an injectable purified protein which blocks acetylcholine receptors (the chemical in the nerve endings that make muscles contract). Once Botox® injections for wrinkles on the face are performed, the nerve endings send a signal to the muscle to contract, but since the acetylcholine has nowhere to attach to the muscle, the muscle is unable to contract. Are there any side effects with Botox®?

There are no permanent side effects known with Botox® therapy for facial wrinkles. However, there are several temporary side effects which can occur including bruising and pain at the site of injection and eyebrow or eyelid droop: This is seen in 1-2% of patients receiving Botox® therapy. It usually only lasts 2-4 weeks, and is mild.
