Acne Therapy

Over 20 million people in north America suffer from acne. Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by diet, poor hygiene or stress. The cause is actually unknown. What we do know is that sometimes pores collapse on themselves trapping oil in what is called the sebaceous gland. This oil allows bacteria to grow and can cause mild to moderate acne, known as "Acne Vulgaris"; "Acne Rosacea", which usually affects people over 30; as well as the more severe types of acne. Fortunately, there are several ways to combat acne causing bacteria.

The Blu U

The Blu U is designed to treat mild to moderate acne. The wavelength generated by this light activates porphyrin production in the acne bacteria which subsequently kills the bacteria, thus reducing the acne lesions. Any skin type can be treated with no side effects.

The Acne Light causes no damage to human skin. Unlike systemic antibiotics, which produce an effect on the entire body, the acne light is specifically targeted to the acne lesions themselves. Patients simply place their faces under the Acne Light twice weekly for four weeks or once weekly for eight weeks. There is absolutely no pain or discomfort.

Photodynamic Therapy

Another novel procedure to treat acne is called Photodynamic Therapy, or PDT. PDT is used in conjunction with Microdermabrasion and Levulan,(aminolevulinic acid) to treat moderate to severe acne, including cystic acne. Levulan is a topical photosensitizer that has been used extensively for a variety of different conditions.

A typical PDT acne treatment starts with a light Microdermabrasion. This helps unclog pores and remove blackheads and white heads (comedomes), as well as exfoliate the surface of the skin. Following the Microdermabrasion, Levulan is applied to the face. It is a clear liquid. A special wavelength of light is then used to activate the Levulan in a controlled fashion. The light source also tends to alleviate any acne scarring, so there is an additional benefit for the patient. Following the treatment one can usually expect the skin to look mildly red as in a sunburn for a few days.

The Photodynamic acne treatment program typically consists of three PDT treatments that are performed once a month. PDT can be used in combination with both topical and oral medications. Prior to PDT, the only treatment to show such good results was Accutane. However, Accutane has many limitations, including systemic side effects. Now many patients can achieve good results with PDT and Levulan, without the systemic side effects.

Other treatments to consider: Fraxel (for removal of scarring), Microdermabrasion & Solvere Acne Clearing Kit
